Visiting Rapid City / Badlands / Mt Rushmore

The Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota dominate the southwest corner of the state and are home to two of the state's well know tourist draws Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Sturgis 2010 marks the 70th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. August 9th through the 15th is official rally week, however the small town of Sturgis will be jamming all through the summer. Sturgis 2010 looks to be more exciting and action packed than ever. Rocker Bret Michaels has been booked to perform adding to the impressive list of headliners including the Marshall Tucker Band and Ice T. As always the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota make the perfect backdrop for the rally, rides and races.

Rapid City is central to the region, however, is surrounded by charming towns filled with fun sights and activities to discover. Seemingly unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities abound for travelers between Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. South Dakota is a treasure chest of travel gems, bound to fulfill anyone's dreams.

Theater buffs, combine a fantastic Broadway show with a trip to the area – Hairspray will be presented at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center March 25 – 26. See the show that inspired the movie, enjoy the pleasant spring weather, and see the sights without the summer crowds.

The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center hosts several shows the weekend of April 10th. The Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Show, the Black Hills Coin and Stamp Club Annual Show, and the Black Hills Motorcycle Show are scheduled, convenient for a family with varied hobbies and interests. The 22nd annual motorcycle show will feature antique and custom bikes of all varieties and judging in five Best of Show categories.

Deadwood is nestled in the Black Hills, north of Rapid City. The name Deadwood has an old west 'ring' and it's historic downtown is a National Historic Landmark District. Take a modern journey into the past and attend the Deadwood Shootout Poker Tournament. Held May 25-30, this multi-event poker tournament is held at locations like Saloon No 10, Cadillac Jacks and the Lucky Nugget. This is serious business, wear your cowboy hat, but leave your holster at home.

Runner's gear up for the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon early June. One of the best kept secrets in marathoning, the event has terrific options for all ages and abilities. The marathon on Sunday has options for a half marathon and a marathon relay. Kids can enjoy pre-marathon Kid's wonderful 1K and Final 2K for the cumulative Kids Marathon. There is a Fast 5K for family and friends of marathoners wanting to participate in an event.

Hot Springs, south of Rapid and aptly named, is site of warm rejuvenating hot springs – Evan's Plunge is a terrific spot to experience the springs. Developed on the site of the original Indian springs, there are a variety of soaking options, and kids will love the swimming pool and slides. Cool spring weather is the perfect time to enjoy a nice soak in the warm water.

The Mammoth Site, also a National Natural Landmark, is the largest mammoth research facility in the world. Take a fascinating look at an active paleontological dig with fossil exhibits in their original locations. Reservations are now being taken for the popular 2010 Jr Paleontologist Excavation Program. Geared for kids ages 4-13, simulated excavations are held daily June through August. Reservations are required and this amazing opportunity for children is popular – Book now for your trip.
